This field trip will introduce the mining history of the Lake Isabella region and also tell the story of Lake Ferdinand, the Pleistocene Lake that was in the same area 50,000+ years ago. We start with examining the boulders at the mouth of the Kern Canyon and how they are part of a history of the uplift, or down-cutting of the Southern Sierra. There we will also be introduced to hydro-electric developments on the Kern River. We will visit the Kergon Mine and learn of uranium developments in the Canyon during the 50’s. We will learn the history of hot spring occurrences and developments in the Canyon and in Lake Isabella, originally named “Hot Springs”. We will examine some mine sites around Lake Isabella and learn about the early Gold Rush days when Havilah was the county seat, and when hydraulic mining happed in the Canyon. We return to Bakersfield through  Walker Basin and learn about the Loraine Mining District.
